Public Relations and Programming Specialist

Job Summary

This position performs library public relations, programming, and clerical work. Completes marketing, promotion and advertising for library services and program. Completes all steps necessary to provide adult programming on a regular basis. Completes all steps necessary for managing and billing for overdue materials.

Schedule Requirements

  1. Some evenings and weekends required
  2. Flexibility to adjust schedule when needed for programming and circulation desk coverage

 

Essential Job Functions

1.)               Research, plan, schedule and conduct adult programming, assists with other programming as needed.

2.)               Solicit and publicize library programs and activities.

3.)               Writes and/or edits press releases and other library-related publicity materials

4.)               Composes, publishes and distributes monthly newsletter and calendar

5.)               Updates and maintains content for electronic billboard

6.)               Maintains and enhances website, staff calendar, New York Times Bestseller list and Facebook page

7.)               Maintains and enhances training manuals

8.)               Compiles order information and places monthly adult materials order

9.)               Maintains patron records including current address, phone numbers and emails

10.)           Processes notices of overdue items on a regular basis

11.)           Submits patron’s files to Small Claims Court as needed

12.)           Maintain listing of over $50 billed accounts and items for replacement

13.)           Greets visitors to the library and provides friendly, high-quality customer service to library users

14.)           Uses and maintains social media websites and does basic digital photography

15.)           Compiles and distributes agenda packets for Board members prior to meetings

 

Other Job Functions

  1. Performs circulation duties and procedures when needed including: loaning and returning materials, placing reserves, checking in materials, shelving materials, checking for damaged materials, interlibrary loan requests.
  2. Assists patrons in the use of library services and facilities.
  3. Assists patrons with technology related questions and issues, and will provide training for patrons using physical and electronic library resources.
  4. Performs other tasks, duties and projects as assigned.

 

Supervision Received
Works under immediate supervision of the Technical Services Librarian and the Library Director

 

Supervision Exercised
Assigns tasks to work study students, interns, or volunteers as needed

 

Knowledge, Skill and Abilities 

  1. Keyboards 35 wpm with high accuracy
  2. Detail-oriented
  3. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the public
  4. Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing and follow oral and written instructions
  5. Proficiency in Microsoft operating systems and software programs (Word, Excel, Publisher)
  6. Experience operating standard office and library equipment such as audiovisual equipment, printers, copier, fax machine and computers
  7. Experience with web page development and maintenance
  8. Ability to follow the policies and procedures of the Edith B. Siegrist Vermillion Public Library

 

Education
High School diploma or GED required; College credits or degree preferred.

 

Experience
Clerical and/or library experience preferred
Experience working with website development, and knowledge of social media preferred

 

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to use hands to handle and feel, operate office equipment, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to stand, talk and hear, and walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, and crouch.

 

The employee must also be able to read and write, and follow oral and written instructions. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

 

Working Conditions

While performing the duties of this job, the employee primarily works indoors. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
