Adult Services Librarian:

Education and Experience:
A Master’s Degree in Library Science from a college or university accredited by the American Library Association is required, plus two to three years of progressively responsible work experience in a public library setting. One to two years of experience supervising and managing staff.
This is responsible, professional and supervisory librarian work in the Adult Services Department of the Minot Public Library. Work is performed under general supervision of the Library Director. The work includes the supervising of approximately ten staff members including: library information specialist, library assistants and library associates. Responsible for participating as a team member and for supporting the Library Board policies and long range goals. The Adult Services Librarian must contribute to a cooperative and welcoming work environment and serve the Library’s internal and external customers in a pleasant and empathetic manner.
The Adult Services Librarian provides reference, research and reader’s advisory services; provides technology assistance to staff and patrons, manages and evaluates Adult Services staff, orders books and materials in assigned subject areas and performs other duties as needed. The Adult Services Librarian is responsible for coordinating all programs for adults, including the planning and promoting of events such as book clubs, guest speakers, the adult Summer Reading Program and more. Work requires the exercise of a high degree of initiative, sound judgment and discretion in the performance of the duties and requires a basic understanding of all job duties performed in the Adult Services Department.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of principles, methods and practices of professional library work (including Collection Management and Reader’s Advisory)
Knowledge of effective supervision methods and practices including performance evaluation, hiring, job assignments, and scheduling
Knowledge of library information systems, working knowledge of computers, Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher and PowerPoint, social networking sites (Facebook, Twitter etc.) and basic website management
Possesses strong customer service skills, the ability to resolve customer concerns and manage disturbances and emergencies in the Library
Ability to conduct reference interviews, analyze requests and perform complex computer searches of databases and internet resources
Ability to communicate (hear and speak clearly) with staff, customers and others
Ability to be a team player and be open to staff comments, suggestions, complaints or consultations
Ability to motivate and lead Library staff
Flexibility in dealing with staff and patrons as well as in implementing innovative library services
Possesses a valid State Driver’s License, an insurable driving record, required
